The Bob Rumball Centre for the Deaf
The Bob Rumball Centre for the Deaf is a multi-purpose, multi-program facility that functions both as a community centre for the Deaf, and as a provider of services to the Deaf. The Centre operates a wide variety of programs, as well as offering a home for the activities and offices of Deaf groups and associations. Several of our programs are residential, with apartments on site, and so the Centre is also home to Deaf seniors and Deaf people with special needs.
Progressive Assisted Living Program
The PAL Program is a residential program which believes that by providing training and learning experiences in communication, daily living, community awareness and behaviour management, individuals we support can achieve further independence. Our program is specifically focused on those Deaf who have developmental and/or physical disabilities, require visual communication (such as sign language, Blissymbolics, picture symbols), and require 24 hour supervision. Staff members always strive to maintain a caring and positive living environment, and assist individuals in building their self-esteem and sense of individuality. All residents are charged a rent fee.
We provide support in the following:
  • Residential care – seven days per week, 365 days per year
  • Twenty four hour supervision
  • Life Plans
  •  Recreation and socialization
  • Community awareness
  • Daily living skills
  • Communication training

Applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Not in need of intense behaviour modification
  • Have demonstrated a desire to more independently in the future
  • Express a desire to live in the program and improve life skills
  • Eighteen years of age or more
  • Deaf with an additional disability or situation which impedes normal development
