The Bob Rumball Long Term Care Home for the Deaf
The Bob Rumball Home for the Deaf is the only Long Term Care facility in Canada which is specifically designed to meet the needs of Deaf seniors. Emphasis is placed on communication and eliminating the isolation many Deaf seniors experience. We are committed to enhancing the quality of life and self-determination of Deaf seniors. We believe in ensuring a unique environment which promotes and preserves Deaf culture, language and heritage.
Resident Care
The Home aims to provide the best quality of care to Deaf seniors who require assisted living, medical care, or additional support. We are committed to excellence in all service areas and dedicated to housing and serving Deaf seniors who are underprivileged.
Services are designed to:
  • Promote a sense of belonging, dignity and individuality;
  • Maintain an optimal level of independence for each resident;
  • Provide opportunities for each resident to participate in all decisions relating to their care;
  • Promote a holistic perspective of health;
  • Provide a resident centered approach;
  • Accommodate various communication modes.
An integrated model of care allows staff to assist residents in all areas of their daily life, creating a personal and home like atmosphere. Staff strive to develop relationships with the seniors and see each not just as a resident but also as a person.
The Home is compliant with the Ontario Long Term Care Homes Act, and regularly updates policies, procedures and regulations under our Quality Improvement Plan. Staff undergo regular skill upgrading and training, as well as instruction in American Sign Language. Additionally, nursing and personal care teams, each headed by a Registered Nurse, have been formed to focus on specific areas of resident care.
Priority is always offered to Deaf seniors, however, we do also accept some hearing seniors with special needs or Alzheimer’s.
